Spiritual Sunday

Hello Everyone,

Spiritual Sundays is where you can write a little something spiritual, a favorite scripture, poem, song or even a prayer. It is hosted by Charlotte and Ginger. Click on the picture to join or to read other Spiritual Sundays posts.

Did you know that the phrase "God will never give you more than you can handle" is not in the Bible?

I wanted to share 1 Corinthians 10:13 with you. It reads (NIV):

No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful;
he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are
tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.

This is the scripture where that phrase originates from. Does it even sound any thing like the phrase that it is tied to? I find it amazing that to me it doesn't. Well it might in a way.

The phrase in question, as I understand it, means God will never give me anything that I can't handle/bear emotionally. But the verse itself alludes to temptation. "You will not be tempted beyond what you can bear and you will have the strenth to bear it" to me that's what the verse means. So exactly what is temptation? Mr. Webster?

1 : the act of tempting or the state of being tempted especially to evil : enticement

2 : something tempting : a cause or occasion of enticement

So does this verse state that while I may be inclined to do something he will give me the strength to overcome this temptation? I think it does.

So when we are facing trials what verses can we turn to? I love James 1:2-4 (NIV):

Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many
kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance.
Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not
lacking anything.

What are you thoughts? When you are going through trials what is your go to verse?

I do have a few prayer requests today too. My brother's girlfriend Patty just found out that her 16 year old son Jake has two blastoma tumors in the back of his brain. From what we understand it is cancer. Two doctors have refused to operate. Now Patty is such a sweet lady. My brother is in love with her and of course you can imagine that this is tearing her up. She is asking for all of our prayers. Her son is really taking this hard. They will be going back to the doctor's on Tuesday to find out about radiation and chemotherapy. Please remember them in your prayers.

Also Baby Jarrod has gained up to 4 lbs. they can not do any surgeries until he is 5 lbs. Here is a little background on Baby Jarrod. Please remember him and his family in your prayers as they are dear friends to me and my daughter.

Beautiful Child of God

Getting some loving from his mommy.

I enjoyed this post. No, I didn't know that that the phrase "God will never give you more than you can handle" is not in the Bible...now I know why I couldn't find it last week for my Word Filled Wednesday post!

Yes, I have always heard this scripture says that we will not be tempted beyond that which we can withstand. God gives us a way of escape if we want it. Problem is so many times people don't want an escape. They want to do what they want to do regardless of the consequences.
I will certainly pray for these two that you mentioned. It is so sad about the brain cancer.
I hope you have a good week.
Blessings,
Charlotte

Interesting study about that phrase. it does raise a few questions. However, I trust in God to come through when we need him. It may not be the answer we expect but in some way He will be there for us.

My prayers go out to Patty for her son's healing somehow. Baby Jared is so sweet. My prayers for him and his family will be constant.

Blessings to you and yours...Jeanne

You are right - the saying and the scripture seem to be saying different things.

My go to scripture seems to be "For God has not given you a spirit of fear but of power and love and a sound mind." The other is "In all things give thanks."

Awesome post Valerie.

What a great post!! I think that scripture is a lot like the saying "no door closes where one is not left open" or something like that I can't recall right off hand. meaning that there is always a way, but a matter of finding the right way. Great post Valerie!!

Thanks for the reminder that Heavenly Father loves me. I think we all could use that reminder sometimes.

I'm guilty of misquoting that verse too! Thanks for setting me straight.

Cancer is a terrible disease; I do hope the young man knows Christ.
